3 simple strategies for empaths

If you're an empath or a highly sensitive person you probably know that one of the biggest challenges is helping those close to us understand what we need. Although there can be an adjustment period, there are 3 simple strategies we can use to feel better.

1. Alone time. For an empath, having alone time in a relationship is not just a luxury. It's a necessity. Balance alone time with people time. Regularly take what Dr. Judith Orloff calls “a golden hour” to decompress, meditate, or any other mindfulness practice.

2. Take breaks. Get into the habit of having lots of mini-breaks throughout the day. Express to those closest to you how vital this is. Empaths need to think and process alone to regroup. Think of this is a time-out for yourself. It gives you space to gain more clarity and will help recharge you for the rest of the day.

3. Don't play the blame game. Of course, it's convenient to blame. As empaths, we have to remember that most people either haven't heard of empaths or they just don't understand it. (empaths only make up about 20% of the population) The world isn't going to change just because we have heightened sensitivities. We are the ones who have to step into this unique power and ask for what we need, even when it's uncomfortable to do so.

If you're an empath, have you used any of these strategies to stay balanced? I know not everyone is an empath. If there is someone in your life who is, pass along these simple tips.
