Are You a Physical Empath?

I've received so many emails with a flood of questions asking what it's like being an empath, what types of empaths are out there, and how they can manage this divine trait. There are a variety of empaths so I thought I'd focus on one at a time. I get it. It's easy to get overwhelmed with so much information.

If you haven't done so already, please take the empath quiz so you'll have a better idea of what it's like being an empath or a highly sensitive person (HSP).

To put it simply, physical empaths absorb or manifest symptoms that aren't their own.

For me, if I see someone hurt, my body physically takes on symptoms and it becomes very uncomfortable. As a kid, when someone would talk about the details of an injury or when I'd even see something on TV, I'd say "That makes the bottom of my feet hurt." (what an odd thing to say, right?) As a kid, that was the best way to describe it.

This is hard for the other 80% of the population to understand. If you're still a bit confused, I'll highlight some of the signs that you might be a physical empath:

  • You've been told you're overly sensitive or even a hypochondriac.

  • If you've sat next to someone who seemed nice and pleasant but suddenly your eyelids got heavy and you felt like taking a nap.

  • You feel uneasy, tired, or sick in crowds and even avoid them.

  • You can feel someone else’s anxiety or physical pain in your body.

  • You feel exhausted by angry or hostile people.

  • You go from doctor to doctor for medical tests, but you're told that "you're fine".

  • You're chronically tired or have many unexplained symptoms.

  • You frequently feel overwhelmed by the world and want to stay home.

Physical empaths do not have the defenses that others have to screen things out. Some of you are NOT physical empaths and might have other empath traits.

︎︎I can assure you, you can center and protect yourself, set healthy boundaries, and let go of the energy you pick up from others.

Discovering that you are a physical empath can be a revelation and a huge relief. Physical empathy can seem overwhelming but there are some simple exercises you can do to ease the suffering.

How do you manage this unique trait of being a physical empath?

Grounding exercises, getting in the water, using pure essential oils, and practicing guided meditation are some of the best ways to help you manage this gift. I'll talk about each of these in the next few posts. We'll also be doing some of these practices in my online group coaching program.

I won't leave you on the edge for long.

Sending love and side hugs,

Rachel
